About KoreanSum

Korean verbs, pronunciation and numbers — worked out by rule, checked against the official standards.

Korean grammar is regular enough to calculate, and irregular enough to trip everyone up. KoreanSum works out every form of a verb or adjective — and how it is really pronounced — so you can check yourself while you learn.

How we keep it accurate

Conjugations follow the Korean spelling rules (한글 맞춤법), with each irregular verb marked by hand. Pronunciation follows the standard pronunciation rules (표준 발음법) and romanization follows the official Revised Romanization (국어의 로마자 표기법), all published by the National Institute of Korean Language. Before every update, our engine is tested against more than 450 examples taken from those rules.

Rules don’t cover everything. Some pronunciations belong to single words (발전 is said [발쩐]), and speech can be faster and looser than the standard. Where that matters, pages say so — and the 표준국어대사전 (Standard Korean Dictionary) is the final word.
